No, the New York Yankees’ season won’t end if they lose Game 4 of the ALCS on Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers, but if the Yanks don’t win tonight that means they only way they can take this series is in seven games – and that would mean having to be an other-wordly Cliff Lee in a Game 7. Of course the concern is that the Yankees are starting A.J. Burnett on the mound, and he was one of the worst pitchers in the American League after about the second month of the season. He has gone 1-7 with a 6.82 ERA since July 28 and is only starting because Yanks manager Joe Girardi doesn’t want to bring back his other three starters all on three days’ rest. Burnett will be coming off a 17-day layoff, having last pitched Oct. 2 when he gave up four runs in six innings against the Red Sox. Burnett has had some success against Texas, going 1-0 with a 2.50 ERA in three starts this season and 4-3, 3.66 in his career.
Meanwhile, young Texas pitcher Tommy Hunter makes his Yankee Stadium debut tonight. Because of an injury Hunter didn’t make his season debut this year until June. He started 8-0 with a 2.31 ERA over his first 10 starts and finished 13-4 with a 3.73 ERA. Hunter allowed three earned runs or fewer in eight of his last nine regular-season starts but last just four innings in his ALDS start vs. Tampa Bay, allowing six hits and three runs.
He will face a Yankee lineup that is scuffling in a big way. Four of the biggest bats in this lineup – Alex Rodriguez, Nick Swisher, Mark Teixeira and Jorge Posada – are a combined 5-45 in the series.
